Sailing Yacht
Petan
1927
Fully Operational
Willian Fife designed Petán, which was built at the Sagredo Sons shipyard in Bilbao, Spain.
Her hull design is said to be the most recent First Rule 8m boat and is acknowledged to be as hydrodynamically sound as a yacht could be at the time. She does not ride waves, but rather rides through them, producing no wake until she is close to her maximum hull speed.
One of its speed secrets is thought to be the distinctive Fife motorhome.
Petán's deck design was the most inventive of any First Rule boat. She is dressed in a Marconi Bermudan platform. It has 1,248 square feet of sail on a 42-foot mast and a 35-foot boom as depicted.
It was built for a Spanish aristocrat named Zubira Marquesa, who gave it the unique original name Sogalinda VII. Petan competed in several historic boat races in his area, including some against King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
