Marbella is one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol. While the seaside city provides for an excellent starting point for an Andalusian trip, there are a number of other fantastic spots along the coast that are well worth seeing. Boating is one of the greatest methods to navigate the sun-drenched region. Here is some selection of the most doable day excursions from Marbella...
Puerto Banús
Nueva Andalucia's mostly residential sector revolves around Puerto Banus, where high-end boats crowd the harbour and sparkling Ferraris roar along the streets. Several streets set back from the harbor are dotted with cafés, bars, restaurants, and sophisticated apparel stores. There are also some of Marbella's top nightclubs, such as Seven and Funky Buddha, as well as a small beach with chiringuitos (small bars selling drinks and tapas). A floating gas dock is available for sail and motorboats.
San Pedro de Alcántara
While docked at Puerto Banus, take a 25-minute trek down the coastal promenade to one of the Costa del Sol's most underappreciated beaches. Playa de San Pedro de Alcantara is a beautiful sunbathing place 11 kilometers (7 miles) west of Marbella, with a wide coastline, excellent services, and chic chiringuitos with waterfront terraces. There's also a lot of shade thanks to the old eucalyptus and palm trees.
Estepona
The rustic charm of Estepona contrasts sharply with the opulence of Puerto Banus. It's a classic Andalusian hamlet with whitewashed buildings covered with colorful flower pots and plants, despite being only 20km (12mi) west along the coast. The main square of Old Town (Plaza de las Flores), an orchid house with one of Europe's greatest collections, and the expansive Playa de la Rada are all must-sees. At La Bulla Gastrobar, don't miss the unique modern tapas.
Fuengirola
This coastal town is known for its 8 kilometers (6 miles) of beaches and vibrant nightlife, but sunbathing and clubbing aren't the only activities available in Fuengirola (as the locals call it). Walk four minutes from the dock to Plaza de la Constitución, where you'll discover shaded terraces for some rest and relaxation. Then go to the mountaintop Sohail Castle, which dates from the Moorish invasion of Spain, and the Bioparc Zoo, where the avant-garde architecture is as eye-catching as the natural park's unique residents.
Benalmádena
Sail to Benalmádena and spend time with eagles while exploring the water depths. The Sea Life Aquarium is located within the marina and allows visitors to interact with deep-sea wildlife such as blacktip reef sharks, green turtles, and seahorses. Return to the surface and take the cable car to the top of Mount Calamorro, which stands at 780 meters (2,560 feet) and offers panoramic views of the Costa del Sol and interior mountains. The Jardin de las Aguilas (Garden of the Eagles) is a birds of prey center featuring owls and eagles among its occupants.
Torremolinos
Torremolinos was in the forefront of the Costa del Sol's tourist boom in the 1950s and 1960s, and it is now firmly established as one of the country's most popular resorts. It offers six different beaches spread over 7km (4mi) of coastline, ranging from the busy Playa del Bajondillo in the town center to the quieter Playa Los Alamos further north. It's located just east of Benalmádena (and only a half-hour walk if you're anchored there), and it's only a half-hour walk if you're anchored there.
Playa de Cabopino
After setting anchor in the Puerto de Cabopino, proceed east for an afternoon promenade followed by sunset sangrias. The sand-and-pebble Calahonda beach, located on the opposite side of the harbour from Playa Cabopino, is flanked by a boardwalk that stretches to Mijas, allowing abundant opportunity to watch the sunset over the Mediterranean. Ocean-view terraces are available at both Luna Beach Calahonda (Mijas end) and Cocoa Beach Marbella (port end).
