Halkidiki, Greece
Sailing cruise on the bay of Thessaloniki. Set sail on the Daily Cruise in Thessaloniki for a cruise in the Thermaic Gulf and feel like a sailor for the day! Your trip will begin in Aretsou Marine, which is located 15 minutes from Thessaloniki's city center. Navagio Beach in Epanomi will be our location for the day.
With crystal blue seas, sandy shoreline, and, of course, an ancient shipwreck going back to the 1970s, you'll have the opportunity to swim around the beach, sunbathe, or grab some snorkeling gear and go investigate this abandoned ship underneath. Join this cruise in Thessaloniki and make your holiday one to remember!
A dip ... in the history of the Thermaikos Gulf Because by the Gulf of Thermaikos, Thessaloniki has always been an important commercial, economic, and military hub. For centuries, travelers, traders, and ship workers traveled across the water to enjoy the grandeur of the city by the sea. But currently, who would believe that the bottom of the bay might be a revelation in the city's history?
The narrative begins with the mermaid of Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great, who hides in her seas and constantly asks ships and commanders if her brother is still alive. Beyond this myth, however, there is evidence that confirms the city's past not only on its streets, but also in the bottom of its bay.
Ioannis Kameniatis, Thessaloniki, depicts a time in the 10th century when Saracen pirate ships swarmed the harbour of Salonika. Its seabed fortifications are in poor condition, and just before the invasion, Petraeus, then emperor of the emperor, will consider constructing a strange barrier within the sea. The dam was unique because it was formed of sculpted tombs that Petronas took from the city's cemeteries and submerged in the waves of the Thermaikos Gulf, resulting in an extraordinary fort. Its construction, however, was only halfway complete, and the city was devastated for the first time in 904 AD. Who would have guessed that Thermaikos' depths were so well-kept?
