To the east, it looks out over the Ionian Sea; to the north, the Alcantara River borders it, flowing between the magnificent "Gole dell'Alcantara"; to the west, and to the south-west, the Simeto River borders it. The present-day Etna is around 3,330 meters high, has a 210 km circumference, and a 1,600 km2 surface area. Its current form belongs to the mid-twentieth century. The most well-known Etna eruption was in 1669, when a massive flow of fluid lava reached Catania and partially destroyed it.
