Bayahibe, Dominican Republic
Samaná is the ideal location to observe North Atlantic Humpback Whales, who spend the winter in the warm marine sanctuary of Samaná Bay before beginning their lengthy journey to their summer pastures, which can be found as far away as Greenland and Iceland!
Although not all humpback whales travel in groups, there are at least 300 whales in Samaná Bay at any given moment during the whale-watching season. With so many whales around, you'll have plenty of opportunities to see various behaviors - it's a matter of patience more than luck.
More than 300 humpback whales travel to Samana Bay every winter, from January to March, to give birth or reproduce...
These are the same whales who left the frigid waters of the North Atlantic for the warm waters of the Dominican Republic!
It is therefore an opportunity to witness mother whales with their offspring and these guys in seduction mode... enough to see spectacular leaps and fin deployment!!
Our French-Dominican staff would be delighted to welcome you aboard our extremely comfortable boat, designed and built by the skipper himself. During your visit, do not hesitate to sit beside the Captain at the helm and listen to his narrative. Or strike up a nice conversation with our two French crew members, who have left everything behind to go on an adventurous journey in the Caribbean. The two Dominican sailors who have been with them since the catamaran's construction will look after the boat before, during, and after your amazing day with us. We can talk to everyone on our small group tours.
We depart about 7 a.m. for a 2-hour journey to Miches, accompanied by your English-speaking guide, where you will be greeted aboard a catamaran with breakfast.
We spend 3 hours at sea in the harbor of Samana seeing humpback whales while your guide explains their manner of life, their origin...
Back on land, you'll board a Safari vehicle and go to the Retonda mountain...A stunning vista in the Dominican Republic where you may snap extraordinary photos with friends or family! It will then be time to refuel with a traditional Dominican lunch before hitting the road and seeing the island's hidden gems!
Our boat, a luxurious 21.5m catamaran, was built in 2013. It provides enough of room for lounging and sunbathing in a secure setting. The boat can accommodate up to 50 passengers, however we decided to limit the maximum number of daily passengers to 25 for comfort reasons.
