OUR EXCURSIONS  South beach of Mykonos

Mykonos is a Greek island of about 33 square miles (85 square kilometers) in size, located next to Delos and between Tinos to the northwest and Naxos and Paros to the south. The population of the island is nearly 12,500 people, the majority of whom live in the main town, also known as 'Chora' or Mykonos Town. Chora means "town" in Greek, and it is common for Greek islands to name their main town after the name of the island itself. It is located on the west side of the island and is the center of a thriving tourism industry, as well as a popular nightlife destination. Tourism is the primary economic activity on the island.

Mykonos was named after its first ruler, Mykonos, the son or grandson of God Apollo and a local hero, according to Greek mythology. The island is also said to have been the site of a great battle between Zeus and the Titans, and it was here that Hercules killed the invincible giants after luring them away from Mount Olympus' protection. In Mykonos, the sun shines up to 300 days per year, and it usually rains only in February and March. Because of the arid climate, vegetation is sparse, and agriculture is limited to barley, grapes, and figs.

Beach Safari is a cruise to the best southern beaches of the island. Starting with the beach of Ornos, where we anchor, continuing with the beach of Psarrou, we sail to the beach of Agia Anna, continue to Akrotiri tou Skorpiou and then to the beach of Paragas, Paradisos, Super Paradise, Agrari and finally to Elia beach. But, let's start our journey from Ornos.

 Mykonos – Rhine Island

Rhenia Island is a small gem of the Aegean Sea. It is uninhibited and adorned with ruins of ancient temples and surrounded by crystal blue waters. Even though it rests next to the very popular island of Mykonos and is a mooring spot favored by experienced skippers, it is relatively unknown - even to Greeks. The first reference to Rhenia dates back 7000 years ago when the island was inhabited. Despite the fact that Rhenia is much larger than its sister island of Delos, it was overshadowed by it.

In 530BC the tyrant Polycrates of Samos island, conquered Rhenia and dedicated it to the temple of the God Apollo, which stood on Delos Island. During the Peloponesian war, Athenians then chose Delos to be a sacred land, thus performing a "catharsis" or purfication. This meant that no births or deaths were allowed on the island that was now considered Holy. All the graves were opened and bodies were exhumed in order to be transfered to Rhenia and to be placed in a huge burial hole which had been especially dug out. Furthermore, seriously ill people were also moved to an infirmary constructed on Rhenia as not to pass away on Delos. Rhenia had become a "Necropolis". In 1900 this mass grave was discovered and the ancient human bones are now exhibited in a museum on Mykonos island. Today, the only occupants of Rhenia are the guards of the ancient ruins of Delos, goats and maybe an occasional donkey.

The trip to Delos and the island of Rhenia is one of the excursions that follow the summer holidays in Mykonos using our boats. Beginning with Delos... We leave Mykonos in the morning and travel westward until the Apollonian light emanating from God's island enchants us, much like the Sirens did with Odysseus, and entices us to drop anchor and visit Delos.
